Big buck fat cats not in country |
Thursday, 18 December 2008
More than 4000 public servants in South Australia earn in excess of $100,000 per year but almost none of these positions are in country South Australia.
The 2008 Auditor General’s report details that between 2007 and 2008 an extra 1,043 public servants began receiving a salary of more than $100,000, up from 3030 in 2007 to 4073 this year.
Shadow Finance Minister Steven Griffiths said that the sharp rise in highly paid positions demonstrates the Rann Governments inability to spend our taxes where they are needed and their lack of interest in regional South Australia communities.
“Ballooning city salaries adds insult to injury to country communities struggling to deal with the drought, losses of hundreds of jobs through the Rann Governments shared services program and government cuts to country health services” Mr Griffiths said.
“The city-centric Rann Government throws millions of dollars at employing city ‘fat cats’ while country towns fight to survive.
“When the Rann Government came to office in 2002 there were only 782 public servants earning over $100,000.
“Millions of dollars is splurged on bureaucrat’s wages but very few of the well paid jobs are based in the country, further handicapping struggling communities which miss out on the injection of these high salaries into their economies.
“Labor does not care about regional South Australia because all but one of its MPs’ electorates is in Adelaide.
“Country South Australians are fed up with the city focussed Rann Labor Government”.
