Future focus needed for local region

As South Australia’s unemployment rate continues to be higher than the national average (SA 4.9% compared to national average 4.2%), labour force indicators show that employment within the local region is also lagging. 

Steven Griffiths MP, Member for Goyder and Shadow Minister for Employment, Training and Further Education said “despite data from the 2006 Census suggesting the general level of education and qualifications within the Yorke and Adelaide Plains region is below the State average, the region provides many employment opportunities.

“Such data clearly identifies the need for government to invest in local education and skills training facilities, Mr Griffiths said.

“The local region provides residents with employment opportunities in many sectors and will continue to do so, particularly given that the regions population is projected to continue to grow at a rate higher than the State average.

“It is important that people’s skills and talents are utilised to benefit the local community and economy so we can keep up with the expected growth.

Mr Griffiths cites that it is anticipated that more than one third of South Australia’s current workforce will be approaching retirement within the next ten years, and with the Yorke region and Adelaide Plains having above average proportions of older people (45 years and older) it is vital planning for the future starts now.
