Inkerman Landfill - Rann consultation is rubbish |
Monday, 24 August 2009
Last week the State Government announced that low level contaminated waste will be accepted at Northward Fill Landfill, Inkerman.
The application by Transpacific Waste Management Pty Ltd to vary its Major Development Approval has been approved through the major development assessment process and has 22 Conditions of Development Authorisation which will be enforced by the Environment Protection Authority.
Member for Goyder Steven Griffiths said that he made a submission to the Minister in March raising his concerns with the proposal, particularly in relation to the real possibility of low level contaminated wastes soils being transferred off site by the regular windy conditions at Inkerman.
These same concerns were also outlined in submissions from the Wakefield Regional Council and members of the community.
“On reviewing the 22 conditions imposed as part of the development approval it makes me wonder if the State Government and the Environment Protection Authority actually even read the submissions received as part of the public consultation process, Mr Griffiths said.
“Most of the issues raised have been ignored and consultation from the Rann Labor Government again appears to occur in theory but not in practice.
“While it is pleasing that leachate management enforcements are in place, including the monitoring of groundwater, the absence of any measures to ensure dust from the low level contaminated waste is adequately monitored and controlled is appalling.
“In complete disregard to the residents of the Adelaide Plains the State Government does not have the details of the development approval conditions readily available. People who want to look at the conditions will need to go to the South Australian Government Gazette website and look at the issue dated 20 August 2009 or contact my office on 8832 2455.
