SA business lacks Rann government support |
Thursday, 17 September 2009
Business confidence in regional South Australia is the second lowest in the nation after New South Wales.
Shadow Treasurer Steven Griffiths said that figures released today from the Sensis Business Index report for September indicate that South Australia business confidence has increased in the quarter May to August, however regional confidence remains low.
“Despite the overall increase in business confidence within South Australia, there are some alarming comparisons with other states, Mr Griffiths said.
“South Australia is the worst performing state in the quarter for employment with more than 7,000 people losing their full-time jobs in August alone. It is clear the Rann Labor Government has failed to secure jobs and support business.
Findings from the Sensis Business Index report also confirm that South Australian businesses recorded the lowest expectations for the year ahead for sales and capital expenditure of any state or territory.
“It is no wonder business support for the Rann Labor Government fell during the quarter. Mr Griffiths said.
“The number of South Australian businesses exporting goods continues to fall well behind the rest of the nation. Only six per cent of our businesses export (falling from 7 per cent in 2008) compared to twelve per cent nationwide.
The Rann Government is dismally failing to meet the target set in the South Australian Strategic Plan to treble the value of South Australia’s export income by 2014.
South Australian businesses need a State government that will support growth and encourage confidence in the current economic climate.
