Speed limit reduction compensates for Labor's neglect |
Tuesday, 8 November 2011
Speed limits should not be reduced on rural roads to compensate for the Labor Government’s neglect of South Australia’s road network.
Road Safety Minister Rankine – the fifth Road Safety Minister in two and a half years – announced that speed limits would be reduced to 100km/hr on 45 rural road sections within a 100km radius of Adelaide and on Yorke Peninsula.
“Instead of lowering speed limits, Labor should be addressing the state’s $200 million road maintenance backlog,” Member for Goyder Steven Griffiths said.
“While Labor has shuffled around the Road Safety portfolio from Minister to Minister five times in the last two and a half years, South Australia’s roads are deteriorating and our road maintenance backlog has reached $200 million.
“One of the best ways to improve road safety is to improve the roads. There is little doubt that the conditions on our local road system contribute to the number of deaths and injuries on our roads.
“Regional South Australians should not be penalised by reduced speed limits because the Labor Government has neglected our road network.
“Lowering speed limits and increasing speeding fines is just another attempt by this Labor Government to raise revenue.”
