Stansbury in line for national title |
Friday, 8 May 2009
The Yorke Peninsula town of Stansbury will today find out whether it has been crowned Australia’s Tidiest Town.
Stansbury – population about 500 – was voted South Australia’s Tidiest Town and Sustainable Community 2008 and is competing against six other interstate finalists for the national title to be announced in Canberra today.
Steven Griffiths Liberal Member for Goyder, whose electorate takes in Stansbury, is part of the community delegation in Canberra for the announcement.
“If Stansbury is named Australia’s Tidiest Town it will be a testament to the hard work of the local community,” Mr Griffiths said.
“More than purely keeping the local area spick and span, Stansbury’s Tidy Town group is also doing great environmental work.
“The group is aiming to make the town the first carbon neutral community in South Australia. It has calculated it can achieve this by planting 6000 trees a year.
“The group has planted 4000 trees already over the last three years, so they are well on their way.
“The Stansbury Primary School has an impressive solar energy program as well as being involved in rainwater collection – which helped the town earn points in the category of sustainability which is needed these days to be considered a Tidy Town.
“For a relatively small community, Stansbury’s Tidy Town group has a dedicated group of volunteers that meets on a weekly basis to ensure the town is always looking its best.
“I wish the group’s members luck for today’s announcement – I know Stansbury’s community has done everything possible to deserve to be named Australia’s Tidiest Town.
“As well as rewarding the people of Stansbury, winning the crown would put the town’s great environmental work in the national spotlight.”
