Mr John Tonkin, Area General Manager, Telstra Country Wide – SA North, was guest speaker at the AGM of the Kadina Moonta Wallaroo branch of the Liberal Party on Friday, 18 April 2008.

With the CDMA mobile phone network closing on 28 April 2008, Mr Tonkin touched on the Next G network.

“28 April will close a chapter in Australia’s mobile telecommunications history and will cement a new era that, for the first time, gives rural and regional people access to the same world-leading services that are available to the population in major metropolitan centres like Sydney and Melbourne”.

“Telstra have also made tremendous inroads delivering broadband across the region. Most recently ADSL technology has been implemented at Ardrossan and Maitland (other exchanges within the region include Balaklava, Kadina, Port Wakefield, Wallaroo and Yorketown), with further upgrades planned for this financial year at Port Broughton, Mr Tonkin said.

Telstra has also announced this year that they would switch on ADSL 2+ high speed broadband in over 900 exchanges across Australia.

Member for Goyder, Mr Steven Griffiths MP, also spoke at the meeting about local issues and in relation to the up coming Tax Summit which will examine reforming the Rann Government’s skyrocketing State taxes.

“The Tax Summit is expected to unite about 100 business and community leaders and experts in looking for a fairer way to tax South Australians”, Mr Griffiths said.

“Due to be held at Parliament House on 12 May 2008, the Opposition is looking at the community’s options for reforming stamp duty, land tax, payroll tax, motor vehicle taxes and gambling taxes along with Government fees and charges which are holding South Australia back”.

Together with Leader of the Opposition, Mr Hamilton-Smith, Mr Griffiths has developed a Tax Discussion paper and ideas from the summit will be used to help the Liberals shape their tax policy for the 2010 State election.
