Will Rann Government act on road petition?

A petition with 2,396 signatures was presented in Parliament today calling for the State Government to provide additional funding for our road network.

Member for Goyder Steven Griffiths MP said “I circulated the petition because we are all sick of the government ignoring our pleas to fix our deteriorating roads that we have no choice but to travel on.

“I am continually being contacted by people fed up with the poor condition of the many roads that are dangerous, some of the stories I have heard are quite shocking and it is very concerning that people driving on these roads are putting their lives at risk, Mr Griffiths said.

“Now the petition has been presented it sends a clear message to the State Government that it is not acceptable that they have failed to provide sufficient funding to undertake maintenance and upgrades within the Goyder Electorate since being elected in 2002, said Mr Griffiths.

“Funding for rural road improvements has been slashed from $7.76 million a year to just $760,000 this year and it will be contemptible for the State Government to continue to ignore the thousands of South Australians and their families who travel on regional roads, Mr Griffiths stated.

“I met with Transport SA representatives in August to discuss the State Government controlled road network within the electorate but it was obvious to me that recent repairs to a section of the St Vincent Highway would exhaust most of the funds allocated to Goyder this year.

“It is time the city-centric Rann Government invested in our regional communities rather than wasting money on government-advertising and trams.
