Worst youth unemployment rate in Australia

The exodus of young South Australians looks set to continue with the state recording the dubious honour of the nation’s highest youth unemployment rate.

At 22 per cent, South Australia had the highest youth unemployment rate of any State last month.

Shadow Employment Minister Steven Griffiths said it was little wonder young people were moving interstate where they have a much better chance of finding a job.

“But the news isn’t any better for other jobseekers with the State also recording the highest unemployment rate of all mainland States at 4.6 per cent,” Mr Griffiths said.

“It is unacceptable when national unemployment has reach 30-year lows that so many South Australians, especially young people, cannot find work.

“The fact is South Australian jobseekers are being left behind by other States that have been able to capitalise on the current economic trends.

”For the past six years, Premier Rann and Treasurer Foley have ridden the national wave of economic prosperity without having any plan of their own for the future.

“Now economic conditions are dampening their lack of a vision for this State has been exposed.”
